One of the great things about my husband is his ability to create just about anything I can conjure up. As a child, I always wished for a treehouse. Now that I'm an adult, I can make that happen for my own kids. They're comparatively much more spoiled than we were, so although they think it's super cool, they have come to expect cool stuff from us. Do I still climb up into the treehouse? Yes, yes I do.
My husband is the builder, but I'm handy, too. We are one hell of a team! This treehouse was NOT built in a day, a weekend, or even a month. We built it in sections over the course of a year or so. Life, jobs, kids....you know how it is.
Although this isn't an exhaustive how-to on building a treehouse or wood playground, there are some materials we did purchase. Several of the items we used are hyperlinked below.
The slides were bought secondhand off of Facebook marketplace. They're the typical slides as seen here. The slides are often sold for five, seven, or none foot platforms. We actually combined multiple slides to create the really big one. The large blue slide was also bought secondhand. The closest slide I could find on Amazon is this twelve footer.
We created the rock wall using these rock climbing holds from Amazon. We used pressure treated lumber, so we had to wait awhile before staining (half of the playground/treehouse still needs to be stained). I wanted to use a dark stain to help blend the structure in with the surrounding trees. I used Cabot Semi-Solid Stain and Sealer in one. I did achieve the dark look with the stain color, but I let the kids pick the net for the bridge. They, of course, chose the brightest, rainbow net Amazon sold (so much for blending in with our natural surroundings...to be honest, I love it actually). I ended up buying two and overlapping them slightly. We reinforced this net with heavy duty rope. Use at your own risk. We also added monkey bars and handles. I used these. One of the most important additions we added to our treehouse was a zipline. My children begged for the light up zipline. We bought the Slackers Night Riderz 100 foot Zipline. It's been months since we "finished" the treehouse and the kids still love the zipline.
We also bought additional swings and such. My daughters specifically requested light pink swings. The quality is great and so was the price. We also added this spider web swing. This is my favorite addition....haha....I like to lay on it and look up at the trees.
For time and money reasons it took us quite some time to build this amazing play structure. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither was this playground.
You could, of course, buy something like this and your kids would love it. I think whether you buy a set or piece something together like we did, your kids will appreciate your efforts (I hope).
First time walking across the rope bridge!
